Computing Science

Encouraging exploration through information technology

  • Progressive learning
  • Encouraging exploration
  • Regular feedback

On this course you will gain a theoretical understanding of how computers and networks operate and how software is written.Your exploration of computing science will start with the building of a PC and ultimately a functioning network. You will learn how to design software and program using contemporary high level languages. In your second year you will experience what it is to be a systems analyst; following methodologies proven in industry you will develop solutions to real world problems.

What Skills will I get from Studying Computing Science?Your exploration of computing science will start with the building of a PC and ultimately a functioning network. You will learn how to design software and program using contemporary high level languages. In your second year you will experience what it is to be a systems analyst; following methodologies proven in industry you will develop solutions to real world problems.

What Careers can I do with Computing Science? The qualification is an academic qualification recognised by all Universities. The course is also ideal for entry in to the working world of computer programming. We have in the past had a student go on to study Computer Science at Cambridge University, while others have had success at gaining places in other universities on computing courses and other related fields.
Some University's offer lower grades to students who have studied A-Level  computer science and want to study it further at university.  Students have also gone on to jobs where they have used their knowledge and skills learnt on the course.

Topics that are covered include:
YEAR 1
01 Computer fundamentals
02 Algorithms and problem solving

YEAR 2
01 Computer Systems
02 Algorithms and programming
03 Programming Project

How is the course laid out?
The Computing Project is worth 20% of the full A-Level. Therefore candidates should be aware that theory is 80% of the full A-Level.
