Several of you have been in touch regarding a letter which you received from Devon County Council informing you of places for KS4 courses at other institutions. I am not surprised that you found this odd. We were not aware that these letters were being sent and believe that they have gone out to every year 9 pupil in the county. Apparently, the local authority is now duty bound to let parents know of schools which admit pupils at aged 14 to pursue largely vocational courses. You will see that the schools mentioned are quite a long way from Honiton – Newton Abbott and Plymouth - and no transport is provided. Clearly, we would much prefer every student in Year 9 to stay at Honiton to complete their secondary education but we also understand if you wish to find out more about these other schools.
However please be assured of the following: the letters have gone to every family – it has been suggested that certain types of student have been targeted eg out of area or SEN and this is not the case; our view is that Honiton students are best served by Honiton Community College; and finally if we had known in advance that these letters were going out, I would have written to you to pre-warn you.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.
