Fairer Funding for our children
Currently, the government are consulting on the proposed ‘fairer funding’ formula for all our schools. If it is approved then Devon schools, such as Honiton, stand to lose even more money per pupil (currently we are one of the poorest funded authorities in the country)! The combined effect of all the potential cuts means that Honiton Community College is set to lose a further £200, 000 next financial year, yet we still must to set a balanced budget. The only option will be to look at current and future staffing structure. This will have a direct impact on teaching, class sizes and option choices.
Politicians state more money than ever is being allocated; they quote 40 billion. However, what they fail to admit is that this increase is to help with the demographic increase. In real terms the funding for schools is dropping by 7-8%. In real terms, there is going to be a drop of over £290 per pupil.
The government is decimating our education system; and it is destroying our children’s future. Schools across the country are willing parents, and politicians to support the campaign for fairer funding. But even more is needed. It is down to all of us to ensure our children are treated with the dignity, respect, and opportunities that this government seems determined to deny them.
